Nepal
Where it all really started for me as I had
only experience a trip to Paris, France with the school back in 1964-5
After a traumatic time with a well known pest control company who as a fresh
graduate employed me as a "Field Biologist", after they had destroyed
a warehouse full of furs and blamed moi (who wasn't even there on the day, we
parted company which in hind site was the best thing that ever happened to me as
I resolved to take my finals again for Membership to the Institute of Biology.
This meant leaving Leeds where I had met some really wonderful people and
settling back into Wolverhampton, sharing a flat with a very pretty girl and
another student who went on to work for the Antarctic Survey. Having sat and
passed my exams, and with absolutely no prospect of work in the UK due to the
Government pulling the plug on research in my field, Entomology, I decided the
best thing would be to travel for a bit which lead me to team up with a
journalist friend to travel to Nepal. Besides the dose of Dysentery I got in
Turkey, I/We had a great time settling into a flat in Swayambhu, a village
then just outside Kathmandu which is also the place of the famous Bhuddist
temple. I eventually picked up part time work for the University of Kathmadu,
copy proofing Scientific research papers in English , and roaming around the
Himalayas collecting butterfly specimens for them.
It was here I met my Dutch partner Hanna who kindly took me to a coffe shop for
some refreshments but sadly had to leave that very day making our next meeting
the following year in 1978 on my return from the Middle East.
I will always remember Nepal as the turning point in my life where not
only did I meet my life-partner, but also entered a new life of photography and
television.
